The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has pledged to deepen collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) in addressing the country’s rising security challenges, including violent extremism, banditry, and inter-communal conflicts.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the Forum’s fifth meeting, held in Abuja from Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, under the chairmanship of Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the governors reaffirmed their collective commitment to enhancing intelligence sharing and inter-agency coordination between state governments and national security institutions.

The move, according to the Forum, aims to strengthen early warning systems, improve rapid response mechanisms, and ensure better protection of lives and property across all regions of the federation.

“The Forum acknowledges the crucial role of intelligence-led security operations and has agreed to deepen cooperation with the DSS and other security agencies to curb emerging threats, promote peace, and sustain national stability.”

Beyond security, the governors also discussed national policy issues, notably the ongoing legislative consideration of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill. The Forum urged all state governors to mobilize political and public support for the bill, describing it as a historic opportunity to promote gender equity and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

“The NGF recognizes the importance of women’s representation in governance and calls on all stakeholders to back the Reserved Seats for Women Bill as a concrete step toward empowering women and strengthening democracy,” the statement added.

The Forum also reviewed economic and fiscal issues affecting subnational governments and reiterated its commitment to fiscal transparency, social welfare, and inclusive growth.

With security and gender inclusion topping the agenda, the governors expressed optimism that sustained collaboration and policy reforms would foster peace, stability, and development across the country.
