As part of activities marking the 39th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Pastor Umo Eno on Tuesday, September 22, officially inaugurated a 14.8-kilometer network of internal roads alongside 1.9 kilometers of underground discharge drains in Awa, the hometown of his predecessor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, in Onna Local Government Area. ​
The commissioning ceremony, which took place in the heart of the Awa community, brought together government dignitaries, traditional rulers, and residents who turned out in large numbers to celebrate the completion of the project. ​
The infrastructure project, comprising 16 distinct road sections, was initiated during the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel and was fully completed by Governor Eno’s administration under the infrastructure pillar of his ARISE Agenda. ​
Speaking at the venue, Governor Umo Eno emphasized that personally commissioning the project was a demonstration of respect for his predecessor and political benefactor. He noted that political continuity and governance must supersede political divides. ​”I have a strong affinity with the people of Onna, and we must continue to develop this area,” Governor Eno declared.
“This inauguration is special because Awa is the hometown of my predecessor and political father, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. Development should not be limited by political differences. We are together, and we will continue to deliver projects that directly impact the lives of our citizens.” ​
Governor Eno disclosed that 26 active development projects are currently underway in Onna LGA, including a general hospital equipped with laboratory facilities to serve as a training center for medical students. To safeguard the newly built roads, the Governor directed his Special Adviser on Labour to conduct an immediate inspection to document their condition and institute weight restriction measures against heavy-duty trucks. ​
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of Onna Local Government Area, Hon. Kufre Umoren, praised Governor Eno for maintaining administrative continuity and prioritizing rural development. ​”The community of our former Governor is a practical example of ‘Akwa Ibom United,’ where people live peacefully regardless of political alignments,” Umoren stated.
“We express our sincere gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for completing these roads, alongside model primary schools and healthcare facilities across Onna.”
​Also speaking on behalf of the state executive council, the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring every local government area receives a fair share of infrastructure under the ARISE Agenda.
The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by Governor Eno, followed by an inspection ride across the newly paved 16 road links.
