In a bold step toward addressing the growing challenges of drug abuse, mental health, and homelessness in Anambra State, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center in the state capital, Awka.
The center, which will be the first of its kind in the state, is designed to provide comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support for individuals battling substance abuse, mental health disorders, and other related challenges. The facility is also expected to serve as a refuge for destitute persons and a reformation hub for those seeking a path back to stability.
Announcing the project during a meeting with members of the State Executive Council on Tuesday, Governor Soludo emphasized that the decision to establish the center reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, social development, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
“Our administration is committed to building a society where every life matters – including those struggling with addiction or mental health issues.
This rehabilitation center is not just a building,’ it is a symbol of our resolve to restore dignity and hope to our brothers and sisters in need,” Governor Soludo said.
The governor highlighted that the rising cases of drug abuse among youths, especially in urban and semi-urban parts of the state, necessitated a proactive and humane response.
He added that the center would be equipped with modern facilities and run by trained professionals including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counselors, social workers, and vocational trainers. The facility will offer both inpatient and outpatient services, as well as community outreach programs.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, praised the governor’s initiative, noting that the project will “mark a turning point in how Anambra State addresses the intersection of public health, youth development, and social welfare.”
Dr. Obidike further disclosed that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with international partners and NGOs, will play a major role in staffing, equipping, and managing the facility to meet global standards.
Civil society groups, traditional rulers, and youth leaders across the state have lauded the governor’s approval, calling it a “timely and visionary move.” They noted that many families have silently suffered the effects of addiction and untreated mental illness, often without access to professional care.
Construction of the center is set to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with completion expected by mid-2026. The state government has earmarked a prime location in Awka for the project, which will also include a skill acquisition wing to help reintegrate rehabilitated individuals into society.
As Anambra State takes this significant step toward strengthening its social support infrastructure, Governor Soludo reiterated his administration’s vision of making Anambra “a livable and prosperous homeland for all.”
