In a tragic turn of events that has shocked the people of Benue State, two travelers were brutally murdered by unidentified assailants on the outskirts of Makurdi. The incident, which occurred in the late hours of Monday evening along the Makurdi–Gboko road, has drawn widespread condemnation, with Governor Hyacinth Alia expressing deep sorrow and outrage.
The victims, whose identities are being withheld pending notification of their families, were reportedly on their way to Gboko from Makurdi when they were ambushed by gunmen near the Agan community. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene, with the attackers forcing the vehicle off the road before carrying out the killings. Security personnel later arrived at the scene and recovered the victims’ bodies.
Reacting to the news on Tuesday morning, Governor Alia issued a strong statement condemning the attack in the “strongest possible terms,” calling it “a senseless act of evil that has no place in our state or society.”
“I am deeply saddened and angered by the brutal murder of two innocent travelers on the outskirts of Makurdi. This act of cruelty is not only an attack on the victims and their families, but also on the peace and security of Benue State,” the governor stated.
He assured the public that security agencies have been directed to launch an immediate and thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
“I have instructed the Commissioner of Police and all relevant security agencies to leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to justice. We will not tolerate lawlessness. Those who dare to spill innocent blood will face the full weight of the law,” he said.
Governor Alia also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, promising that his administration will continue working tirelessly to improve security across the state.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this terrible incident. We stand with them in this time of grief and assure them that justice will be served,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Patrols have been intensified along major highways and hotspot areas around Makurdi in a bid to deter further attacks and reassure the public.
Community leaders in the affected area have also spoken out, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing any information that could help track down the assailants.
As the state mourns the lives lost, Governor Alia reiterated his commitment to peace, security, and justice. He called on all citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that the safety of every Benue resident is a top priority for his administration.
