Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has formally signed an Executive Order banning masquerade displays on streets and major highways across the state, citing growing concerns over public safety.
The decision, announced last week, was reaffirmed on Tuesday at Government House, Uyo, where the governor signed the order in the presence of senior government officials. According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the ban followed a series of reported cases of harassment, extortion, and disturbances linked to masquerade activities in various communities.
These incidents, the government noted, have posed threats to commuters, business owners, and residents. Governor Eno said the state could no longer overlook the disruptive behaviour associated with some masquerade groups, stressing that while the government respects cultural expressions, such practices must not endanger public peace or hinder free movement.
“We will continue to honour our traditions, but not at the expense of the safety and security of our people,” he said, directing security agencies to enforce the order immediately. The Executive Order prohibits street masquerade displays, roadblock rituals, and any form of costume parades on major roads without prior government approval.
Violators, the statement warned, will face prosecution. The directive has drawn mixed reactions from residents. While some welcomed the move as necessary for restoring order, others argued that it could affect cultural celebrations in some communities.
The government, however, maintained that the measure is temporary and will remain in place until a more regulated framework for cultural displays is developed.
