Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Sunday paid a visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, reaffirming that efforts to secure his release were actively ongoing.
Governor Otti’s visit marks a significant development in the continued calls for Kanu’s freedom, as he becomes one of the most prominent political figures to meet directly with the IPOB leader since his relocation to Sokoto.
The governor was accompanied by a delegation that included Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
During the visit, Otti reportedly assured Kanu that discussions and negotiations aimed at resolving his legal challenges were progressing, emphasizing that his administration remained committed to pursuing all lawful avenues that could lead to his eventual freedom.
The meeting is expected to further intensify public interest and political discourse surrounding Kanu’s prolonged detention and the federal government’s handling of his case.
While details of their private discussion were not disclosed, sources within the delegation described the interaction as “warm, hopeful, and forward-looking.”
Kanu, who has been in detention facing charges bordering on terrorism and secessionist activities, continues to draw support from various groups in the South-East and beyond, who insist that his release is critical to restoring peace in the region.
