The Gombe State government has approved N2 billion for solar streetlight installations and rural infrastructure projects across multiple local government areas, aiming to enhance security and development. Announced on July 22, 2025, by Malam Mahmood Yusuf, Director-General of the Joint Project Development Agency, during a press briefing in Gombe, the funds were greenlit by the Joint Project Council (JPC), chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. The initiative targets improved living standards through sustainable infrastructure, building on earlier approvals of N1.15 billion in March 2025 for similar projects in Kumo, Yamaltu/Deba, and Billiri.
Key projects include solar streetlights for newly constructed roads in Kumo, costing N740 million, and fencing plus solar lighting for the NALDA market in Kwadon, Yamaltu/Deba, at N362 million. An additional N47 million will fund the expansion of the grains market and construction of six public toilets in Billiri. Yusuf emphasized that these efforts align with Governor Yahaya’s vision for infrastructure growth, with added measures to curb theft in public facilities through the deployment of Gombe Security Traffic and Environmental Corps (GOSTEC) and Operation Hatara across all 11 LGAs. “These projects will improve security and quality of life for our people,” Yusuf said, highlighting the focus on sustainable development.
The approval follows Gombe’s recent push for clean energy, including the signing of the Gombe State Electricity Law 2025 in May, which established a framework for local electricity management and supports projects like the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park. Local leaders, including Shongom’s Chairperson Fatima-Binta Bello, praised the initiative for boosting education and healthcare access, while Kwami’s Ahmad Wali noted efforts to prevent farmer-herder conflicts through grazing reserve remapping. The projects underscore Gombe’s commitment to rural electrification and modernization, leveraging solar solutions to address Nigeria’s grid challenges.
