Hosts Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in the first game of the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 to qualify for the next round of the competition, in a match played at the Los Angeles Stadium.
Neither team had ever gone past the group stage of the tournament before meeting each other on Sunday.
It looked as though the encounter was heading for a stalemate until Stephen Eustáquio produced the winning goal for Canada in the 92nd minute.
Following the victory, Jesse Marsch’s side will now play the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco in the last 16.
