Nigeria has formally joined the league of nations with globally recognised measurement standards following the official signing of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM MRA).

The signing ceremony took place at the Pavillon de Breteuil in Sèvres, near Paris, France; the historic headquarters of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).

The event followed Nigeria’s formal admission as an Associate State of the BIPM on June 4, 2026, and marked a milestone coinciding with the third anniversary in office of the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke.

By endorsing the CIPM MRA, Nigeria becomes one of only six African nations, alongside Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia, to achieve full participation in the BIPM measurement framework. The landmark accord guarantees that measurement standards, calibration certificates, and testing capabilities generated in Nigeria will enjoy mutual recognition across international borders.

Speaking on the strategic importance of the accord, SON Director-General Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke stated that the agreement marks a transformative era for Nigerian manufacturing and cross-border trade.

”This arrangement brings international recognition to Nigeria’s measurement capabilities, guarantees global acceptance of our calibration certificates, and paves the way for easier trade across borders,” Dr. Okeke said. “It directly reduces our dependence on foreign metrology services, strengthens SON’s technical authority, and opens crucial doors to scientific collaboration and capacity building.”

Corroborating the development in a statement released from SON headquarters, the Director of Corporate Affairs at SON, Mrs. Ethan Talatu, outlined the operational benefits for Nigerian small businesses and exporters.

”The CIPM MRA is the global framework through which national metrology institutes demonstrate the equivalence of their measurement standards,” Mrs. Talatu noted. “For local manufacturers and small businesses, internationally accepted certificates mean their products can be tested at home and trusted abroad, eliminating the exorbitant costs of re-testing in foreign laboratories.”

The international accord aligns with ongoing regulatory and quality reforms under Dr. Okeke’s leadership. Over the past three years, SON has expanded its digital infrastructure, introducing the Digital Standards Platform, e-MANCAP, and the Electronic Product Registration System, while integrating SONCAP and Import Permits into the National Single Window portal.

These efficiency measures earned SON second place among federal ministries, departments, and agencies in the 2024 PEBEC Transparency and Efficiency Report.

Furthermore, SON has certified 131 companies and 220 products under the African Quality Mark, giving Nigerian producers a technical passport under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The agency also launched the Nigerian National Standardisation Strategy (2024–2027), secured approval for 217 Nigerian Industrial Standards, and developed over 80 standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to support the Federal Government’s gas-to-transport transition.

With the CIPM MRA now in effect, Nigerian exporters across industrial, agricultural, and energy sectors are expected to benefit from reduced trade barriers, lower compliance costs, and enhanced global market access.
