Surulere kid is cooped up in a dirty urban concrete desert choking on generator smoke, and his parents can’t let him play outside for fear of becoming roadkill due to a cult clash, reckless driver, or a stray police bullet. From day 1, both kids have been psychologically set up to become very different human beings.
“Surulere kid’s parents have to pay through their noses for every aspect of his education just to get him to write WASSCE and pass acceptably. Nungua kid’s parents did not need to spend a penny apart from his basic tuition fees. No home lesson teachers etc. Just a classroom education is good enough.
Surulere kid may be asked to write JAMB (Nigerian university entrance test) at 6AM in another state. If he fails to get into one of the better institutions, that simple thing can determine how the rest of his life turns out because there is a HUGE quality and infrastructure gap between the older universities and the newer ones.
“Nungua kid knows that whether he ends up at Legon, KNUST, Ho, Cape Coast or wherever, his education will have a certain minimum standard, and he gets paid an allowance from the government. Also the fees are heavily subsidised.

“Nungua kid doesn’t have to work while earning his degree because the state has taken the financial burden off him. Surulere kid either has to work or call his parents every 5 minutes to pay for books, fees, “sorting” lecturers, exam reg, etc etc.
“When Nungua kid completes his degree in the allotted 4 years, he can immediately enter the workforce. Surulere kid may complete his 4 year degree in 6½ years because of ASUU strikes, and then he has to wait to be mobilised for another year of limbo called NYSC, without which he is not legally entitled to apply for most jobs in Nigeria.
“Oh and amid all this, Nungua kid never has the mental stress of avoiding death at the hands of police or campus cultists. Literally his only job on earth is to do well in school, and his escape from poverty is almost guaranteed if he does well enough.
“Surulere kid might jump through all the hoops placed in front of him, then get shot dead on the way to buy suya one evening 2 months to his graduation because he wore the wrong colour of shirt and was mistaken for a member of a rival cult.
“It’s very difficult to explain all this to Ghanaians because it’s like trying to explain what hell looks like to an atheist,” he added.
