Barely three weeks after a fuel tanker explosion killed over 100 people and injured about 70 others, a gas plant has exploded in Sabon-Wuse, Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NISEMA), which confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday – yesterday, February 9 – said the explosion occurred at 11:00pm on Saturday at one Tasiu Gas Plant, beside Kalasma Filling Station, sabon wuse, along Kaduna expressway.

Issued by the Director of NISMA, Alhaji Baba Arah, the statement explained that the incident occurred as gas was being transloaded from a gas tanker to the surface tank.

According to him, “both the gas tanker and the gas plant were completely destroyed in the incident, including a car belonging to one Abubakar Yakubu, which was parked by the side of the gas station.

Also a Ngeil grains processing factory behind the gas plant was razed by the inferno, destroying  about 550 bags of beans and six bags of soybeans, in the process.

He, however, disclosed that there was no report of any loss of life as at the time of filing this report in the late afternoon yesterday, while efforts were on to clear the area after the fire had been put under control.
