Gani was undergoing treatment for Cancer in London during his 70th birthday. So, when he came back, scores of “notable” Nigerians were coming to his house to wish him happy birthday and use the opportunity for photo ops.
I then reached out to Dele Alake, wondering why Tinubu had not come to visit Gani for his 70th birthday, or whether he was still upset over Gani’s battle with him on Chicago matter.
Ostensibly, Alake took to the advice and arranged for the visit. Tinubu gave Gani a giant birthday card when he cane for the visit. Thereafter, both of them retired to the three-seater in the living room where they spoke for some few minutes.
We didn’t know what they discussed.
As with his practice, Gani saw him off to his vehicle, despite his ailing physique.
Now, this is where I’m going to. When Gani came back to meet us in the house, he said, in his fading voice (destroyed by lung cancer)
….. “That man, Tinubu that just left now, the way I’m looking at him, he has ambition o. He is aiming to be President”.
We didn’t know what gave Gani that intuitive instinct.
So, when Asiwaju went to the Villa to see Buhari and then addressed the press about his presidential ambition, that it was a life-long ambition .. my mind went to what Gani told us many years ago.
