In an embarrassing turn of events for law enforcement, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained four police officers who allegedly extorted ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN).
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed the arrests on Monday, July 20, 2026, during a media briefing in Abuja, describing the suspects as “thieves” who disgraced the force.
According to police authorities, the four officers abandoned their designated duty posts and formed a rogue unit around the busy Banex plaza area in Wuse, Abuja. The crew set up an illegal stop-and-search checkpoint to extort unsuspecting motorists.
Unaware of his identity, the officers flagged down Dr. Musa Aliyu’s vehicle. They forced the anti-corruption chief to march to a nearby Point of Sale (POS) operator, where he was made to withdraw ₦53,000 and even cover the transaction fees before the officers divided the cash among themselves and let him go.
”They extorted him of ₦53,000. They took him to a POS, he withdrew the money, paid the charges, and they shared the money among themselves,” CP Ahmed Sanusi told reporters. “We have about four policemen in custody as we speak who successfully extorted somebody of high importance, unknown to them that this person is a highly placed person in society.”
The Commissioner also reiterated the Inspector-General of Police’s strict standing order prohibiting patrol officers from conducting unauthorized roadside stop-and-search operations or inspecting citizens’ mobile phones, urging members of the public to report any unlawful conduct by police personnel.
