In a letter signed by Babangida, the retired General praised the Vanguard founder and co-founder of The Punch for a friendship that has endured “over half a century of mutual trust and respect.” He called Amuka-Pemu’s loyalty and generosity of spirit “qualities which I have always cherished.” Reflecting on the celebrant’s impact as “our nation’s most successful newspaper proprietor,” Babangida said his contributions to national discourse and development “remain invaluable.”
Babangida wrote, “On this day… I wish to thank you for the times when you gave me so much joy through your kindness and unalloyed support,” and wished him “good health, happiness, and abundant years of fruitful living.” Signing off with the phrase “Man wey know man…,” Babangida affectionately referred to the nonagenarian as “Uncle Sam,” applauding his enduring love for life and humanity.
