The Igbo Community Association (ICA), FCT Chapter, has urged the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, to undertake immediate rehabilitation of federal highways connecting the South-East region to other parts of the country ahead of the upcoming Yuletide travel season.
​The appeal was contained in an official press statement jointly issued on Sunday, August 30, 2026, by the Association’s President General, Nze Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and the Secretary General, Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah.
​The group expressed deep concern over the persistent neglect of key arterial transit routes linking the South-East to the South-West, North-Central, and South-South geopolitical zones.
Highlighted corridors, including the critical Benin-Agbor-Asaba route have severely deteriorated, resulting in extreme travel delays, vehicle destruction, economic loss, and heightened exposure to security risks such as kidnapping.
​While referencing Minister Umahi’s recent inspection of failed road sections along the Benin-Asaba axis, the ICA leaders emphasized that reactive measures are insufficient to address the systemic decay of South-East access routes.
The association called on the Federal Ministry of Works to deploy immediate, targeted road restoration projects to ensure safe passage for millions of commuters traveling home for the year-end holidays.
Restoring failed road sections is crucial to eliminating travel bottlenecks where motorists are vulnerable to criminal attacks. The ICA urged the Federal Government to maintain equity and fairness, stating that South-Easterners are equal stakeholders entitled to functional, modern road networks.
​The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for infrastructural equity and protecting the rights and dignity of Igbo citizens living in the Federal Capital Territory and across the diaspora.
