A fire outbreak has reportedly engulfed the old terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, a facility currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation. Details surrounding the incident were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report. However, the affected terminal, part of the airport’s older infrastructure, is being renovated as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade facilities and enhance passenger experience at the nation’s busiest international gateway.
Confirming the development, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Henry Agbebire, said authorities had swiftly mobilised to the scene to manage the situation. “We are aware of the outbreak, and we are there right now. We will publish a statement right now,” Agbebire said. He added that the agency’s emergency response team had immediately swung into action to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the airport facility.
“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation,” he said. As of press time, the cause of the fire had not been officially disclosed, and it was unclear whether there were casualties or significant structural damage. Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations progress.
