Following public backlash, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has cancelled its earlier directive calling for prayer and fasting sessions aimed at seeking divine support to address Nigeria’s food security challenges.
A leaked internal circular dated June 11, signed by the Director of Human Resource Management, Mrs. Adedayo Modupe O., had invited top ministry officials—such as directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, and value chain desk officers—to participate in weekly prayer meetings at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
However, a later communication from the same director confirmed that the prayer programme had been postponed indefinitely. No official reason was given for the cancellation.
Naija News reports that the reversal came after widespread criticism from the public, especially on social media, where many questioned the use of spiritual solutions during a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with rising food prices and widespread hunger.
Many critics urged the ministry to focus instead on tangible actions—such as improving agricultural infrastructure, providing subsidies to farmers, and fixing food distribution channels.
“This is not the time for optics or rituals. Nigerians need food security plans, not prayer schedules,” said one social media commentator, echoing a common view across online platforms.
