The Federal Government has released a comprehensive list of federal hospitals across the country where Nigerians can now access dialysis sessions at a subsidised rate of ₦12,000 per session, as part of efforts to ease the burden of kidney disease management.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, noting that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to make healthcare more affordable and accessible.
Alausa explained that the subsidised dialysis cost was made possible through intervention funds provided by the Federal Government, which have already been disbursed to selected federal medical centres and teaching hospitals.
He said the government was aware of the growing cases of kidney-related ailments in the country and the financial strain it places on citizens, adding that the subsidy is aimed at reducing out-of-pocket expenses for patients.
The government recognises that dialysis treatment is lifesaving but costly. By fixing the session cost at ₦12,000 in federal facilities, we are helping thousands of Nigerians to continue their treatment without the fear of being completely impoverished,” the minister stated.
According to the Ministry of Health, the following hospitals have commenced the subsidised dialysis programme:
University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan – Oyo State
Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba – Lagos State
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta – Ogun State
Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife – Osun State
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria – Kaduna State
Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano – Kano State
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo – Taraba State
University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla – Enugu State
Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi – Anambra State
University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) – Rivers State
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) – Edo State
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa – Bayelsa State
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi – Nasarawa State
University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) – Kwara State
Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) – Plateau State
Dr. Alausa further assured that more centres will be added in phases as additional funding and resources are mobilised. He also encouraged state governments and private investors to partner with the Federal Government in expanding dialysis access.
Health experts estimate that about 20 million Nigerians suffer from various forms of kidney disease, with thousands requiring regular dialysis or transplant. However, high costs—previously ranging between ₦25,000 and ₦40,000 per session—have forced many patients to abandon treatment, leading to avoidable deaths.
Stakeholders and patient advocacy groups have welcomed the intervention, describing it as a “timely relief,” though they urged the government to ensure strict monitoring so that hospitals comply with the fixed rate.
