The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture to tackle emerging security threats and safeguard national sovereignty.

Speaking at a defence policy forum in Abuja on Tuesday, Akume said the government under President Bola Tinubu was investing heavily in modern military technology, intelligence gathering, and capacity building to enhance the readiness of the nation’s armed forces against evolving challenges.

According to him, global and regional security dynamics demand proactive measures to ensure that Nigeria remains resilient in the face of new and unconventional threats such as cyber warfare, terrorism, and transnational crimes.

Nigeria cannot afford to be complacent in an era where threats are rapidly changing,” Akume stated. “The Federal Government is boosting defence capabilities through modernization of equipment, improved training, and better coordination among our security agencies.”

He noted that the government has taken deliberate steps to strengthen collaboration with international partners in intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism operations, while also prioritizing local research and innovation in defence technology.

We are encouraging homegrown solutions, enhancing local defence production, and ensuring our armed forces are equipped with tools necessary to defend our territorial integrity,” he added.

Akume emphasized that national security is the bedrock of sustainable development, stressing that the government’s reform agenda is anchored on creating a safe and stable environment for economic growth and investment.

He also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices and professionalism in defending the nation, assuring them of continued government support in welfare, logistics, and strategic empowerment.

The SGF called on Nigerians to support the government’s efforts in maintaining peace and unity, noting that security is a collective responsibility.

While government leads the charge in defending our nation, every citizen has a role to play in promoting peace, vigilance, and patriotism,” Akume said
