The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and privacy in the digital space, unveiling a series of policy and regulatory frameworks designed to bolster the country’s cybersecurity infrastructure.
Dr. Ayodele Bakare, Assistant Director of the Cybersecurity Department at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), spoke on the government’s initiatives during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.
According to Dr. Bakare, Nigeria’s approach to cybersecurity governance relies on a collaborative model, bringing together multiple government institutions with distinct roles to ensure comprehensive protection against cyber threats. “Effective cybersecurity requires coordinated action across agencies. Each institution has specific responsibilities, and together they contribute to a resilient digital ecosystem,” he explained.
He highlighted the central role of the Office of the National Security Adviser in providing overall coordination of national cybersecurity efforts. The office achieves this through the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre, which serves as its operational arm, monitoring cyber threats, and coordinating responses to digital incidents.
Dr. Bakare further explained that the frameworks being implemented include regulations for the protection of personal data, critical infrastructure, and government networks, alongside initiatives to promote awareness and digital literacy among citizens. “We are not only focusing on threat prevention but also on empowering individuals and organizations to safeguard their digital presence,” he said.
The NITDA official noted that the policies are designed to align Nigeria with global best practices in cybersecurity while addressing local challenges, including cybercrime, data breaches, and unauthorized access to sensitive information. He stressed that the government is committed to ensuring that Nigerians can operate safely online, whether for business, education, or personal use.
By reinforcing the country’s cybersecurity governance, the Federal Government aims to build trust in digital services, attract investment in the technology sector, and protect citizens from growing cyber risks. Dr. Bakare added that regular assessments, capacity-building programs, and cross-agency coordination remain key components of the ongoing efforts.
Experts say that with the increasing reliance on digital platforms for commerce, communication, and governance, strong cybersecurity frameworks are critical to national security and economic growth. Nigeria’s proactive stance, guided by NITDA and coordinated through the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre, reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding both institutional and individual digital interests.
As Nigeria continues to deepen its engagement with emerging technologies, officials emphasize that the combination of robust policies, inter-agency collaboration, and public awareness campaigns will be instrumental in creating a safer digital environment for all citizens.
