The Federal Government has intensified efforts to transform scientific research generated in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and research institutes into practical innovations capable of creating jobs, establishing startups, and driving economic growth.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns within government and policy circles that many innovations developed in Nigerian laboratories often remain confined to academic papers and research reports instead of being converted into commercially viable products and services.
Officials say the renewed push is aimed at ensuring that research outputs lead to real-life solutions, thriving businesses, and employment opportunities that can contribute meaningfully to national development.
The initiative formed the central focus of a strategic meeting convened in Abuja by the Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology.
The gathering brought together state Commissioners for Science, Technology and Innovation, heads of relevant government agencies, and key industry stakeholders to discuss ways of bridging the gap between research findings and commercial application.
Speaking during the meeting, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, stressed the need to reposition Nigeria’s research ecosystem so that discoveries made in laboratories can translate into marketable products and sustainable enterprises.
According to him, Nigeria has made considerable investments in research across its higher institutions and specialised research centres, but the economic impact of these investments remains far below their potential.
Udeh noted that many groundbreaking ideas generated by Nigerian scientists fail to progress beyond the academic stage because of weak commercialization structures, limited industry collaboration, and inadequate support for innovators seeking to develop their ideas into businesses.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Philip Ndiomu Ebiogeh, emphasised the importance of stronger policy coordination between federal and state governments to ensure that research results are effectively harnessed for national development.
He explained that building a robust innovation ecosystem requires partnerships between government institutions, academia, and the private sector, particularly in areas such as technology incubation, venture funding, and intellectual property management.
The Director-General of the National Board for Technology Incubation, Kazeem Kolawole Raji, highlighted the role of technology incubation centres in supporting innovators and startups.
Raji noted that incubation programmes provide mentorship, workspace, technical support, and access to investors, helping young innovators transform their ideas into commercially successful ventures.
He added that strengthening such programmes across the country could significantly increase the number of research-driven startups emerging from Nigerian institutions.
In her contribution, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology in Kogi State, Helen Adeniyi, called for greater collaboration between state governments and federal agencies to promote innovation at the grassroots level.
Adeniyi stressed that states must play an active role in nurturing local talent and supporting technology-driven enterprises that can address regional challenges while contributing to the broader national economy.
Participants at the meeting agreed that Nigeria possesses vast intellectual capacity within its universities and research institutions, but unlocking this potential requires deliberate policies that promote commercialization, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships.
The renewed government effort is expected to focus on strengthening technology incubation programmes, encouraging innovation-based startups, improving research funding mechanisms, and creating policies that support the translation of academic discoveries into products that can compete in both local and international markets.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that if the initiative is effectively implemented, Nigeria could significantly boost its innovation economy and position itself as a leading hub for science and technology development in Africa.
