The Federal Government has welcomed the suspension of the teachers’ strike in Oyo State, describing the decision as a triumph of dialogue, cooperation and constructive engagement, while expressing optimism that the development will restore uninterrupted academic activities in public schools across the state.
The government said the resolution was achieved through sustained consultations involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Oyo State Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) at the national, zonal and state levels.
According to the government, the collaborative efforts culminated in an agreement that paved the way for teachers to return to classrooms, bringing an end to the industrial action that had disrupted learning in public primary and secondary schools.
The position of the Federal Government was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.
The statement quoted the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, as saying that the suspension of the strike reflected the shared commitment of all stakeholders to place the welfare, education and future of schoolchildren above every other consideration.
According to the minister, the successful resolution of the dispute demonstrates that meaningful dialogue remains the most effective approach to resolving labour-related disagreements in the education sector.
He commended the Oyo State Government, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and officials of the Federal Ministry of Education for their willingness to engage in constructive discussions that ultimately led to a peaceful resolution.
Alausa noted that uninterrupted access to quality education remains one of the Federal Government’s priorities, stressing that prolonged industrial actions often have far-reaching consequences for students, teachers and the nation’s educational development.
He observed that the return of teachers to their classrooms would enable pupils and students to resume normal academic activities and recover lost instructional time.
The minister expressed confidence that the agreement reached among the parties would foster a more stable and harmonious relationship between education authorities and teachers in the state.
He further encouraged all stakeholders in the education sector to continue embracing dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration whenever disputes arise, rather than allowing disagreements to escalate into prolonged strikes.
According to him, industrial harmony is essential for creating an environment where teaching and learning can thrive without unnecessary interruptions.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting state governments in efforts aimed at strengthening the education sector and improving the welfare and professional development of teachers across the country.
The ministry noted that teachers remain central to the nation’s educational system and that their contributions to human capital development cannot be overemphasised.
It added that continued collaboration between governments, labour unions and other stakeholders would be critical to addressing challenges affecting the sector and ensuring sustainable improvements in the quality of education.
The government urged teachers in Oyo State to resume their duties with renewed commitment and continue providing quality instruction to learners, while assuring them that ongoing engagements would focus on sustaining industrial peace and addressing legitimate concerns through established channels.
Parents and guardians were also encouraged to ensure that their children return to school promptly now that academic activities have resumed.
The ministry reiterated that the welfare of learners and the uninterrupted delivery of education remain at the heart of the government’s policies, adding that every effort would continue to be made to prevent avoidable disruptions in schools.
