FG hails Bangladesh’s democratic milestone, congratulates president-elect Alamgir

The Federal Government of Nigeria officially issued a press release on Thursday, August 20, 2026, congratulating Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh.

​The congratulatory message was formally released via the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Center and reinforced through an official statement on X on Friday, August 21, 2026, by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

In the statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Federal Government described President Alamgir’s election as a major milestone in Bangladesh’s democratic evolution:

​”The Federal Government of Nigeria extends its warm congratulations to His Excellency, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on his election as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. This milestone reflects the trust of the Bangladeshi people and reinforces the country’s commitment to democratic governance, national stability, and peaceful institutional transitions.”

​In her social media post, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that Nigeria looks forward to enhancing bilateral cooperation, trade, and economic partnerships with Bangladesh during President Alamgir’s tenure.

The parliamentary vote took place inside the session chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh’s Parliament) in Dhaka between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM local time on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Voting was followed immediately by the vote count at 5:02 PM.

​Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin formally announced the result inside the chamber, confirming that Alamgir won 255 votes out of 343 ballots cast. His opponent, Colonel (Rtd.) Oli Ahmad of the Liberal Democratic Party, received 88 votes.

Following the declaration, prominent leaders delivered remarks and expressed well wishes. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman greeted the newly elected president in the chamber with a red rose and embraced him, stating;

​”This is a moment of democratic unity for our nation. I look forward to working closely with President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to build a prosperous and stable Bangladesh.”

Prof. Muhammad Yunus, Nobel laureate and former chief adviser to the interim government, congratulated President Alamgir in a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026:

​”Mr. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s political journey spans more than five decades and is closely intertwined with the political history of Bangladesh.

I believe that, as an academic, a seasoned politician, and man of principle, he will further uphold the dignity of the highest constitutional office of the state. I look forward to Bangladesh advancing towards greater prosperity, justice, and democracy under his leadership.”
