The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced on Wednesday that the Federal Government has begun active, high-level engagement with the United States to address concerns stemming from Washington’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged Christian genocide.
Idris, who made the disclosure during a briefing in Abuja, described the designation as a serious issue requiring immediate diplomatic attention. He noted that the Nigerian government is working to clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegation and to present what he termed a more accurate picture of the country’s religious and security situation.
According to the minister, Nigeria remains committed to religious freedom, peaceful coexistence and the protection of all citizens regardless of faith. He stressed that the government rejects any suggestion that it supports or condones the persecution of Christians or any other group.
“We are in active, high-level engagement with the United States to address all concerns arising from this designation,” Idris said. “Nigeria is a country built on diversity. We will continue to uphold the rights and freedoms of every citizen.”
He added that the government is confident the ongoing discussions will help correct misconceptions and ensure that Nigeria’s efforts to combat insecurity—affecting both Christians and Muslims—are fully understood by the international community.
The U.S. designation has generated reactions from religious organisations, civil society groups and policy analysts, many of whom have called for thorough diplomatic engagement to prevent the development from straining relations between the two countries.
Idris assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is handling the matter with the seriousness it deserves and will continue to work with global partners to strengthen national security and foster unity across the country.
