The Federal Road Safety Corps has intensified nationwide enforcement to flush out dangerous drivers and eliminate life-threatening practices on major highways as Nigerians embark on end-of-year travels.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Monday during a strategic monitoring of vehicular movement in Kaduna as part of the ongoing Zero Tolerance special operation for the festive season.
Mohammed said the corps had massively deployed officers, patrol vehicles and other logistics to key corridors linking Kaduna, Abuja and Lokoja in response to the heavy traffic recorded in recent days, particularly along the Abuja–Lokoja Road.
According to him, the special operation is aimed at ensuring free flow of traffic, reducing road crashes and safeguarding lives and property during the festive period when vehicular movement usually increases.
He warned motorists against speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, drunk driving and other traffic violations, stressing that offenders would be arrested and sanctioned in line with the law.
The FRSC boss noted that personnel had been stationed at identified black spots and congestion-prone areas to promptly respond to emergencies and clear obstructions that could trigger gridlock or accidents.
Mohammed also appealed to drivers to exercise patience, obey traffic rules and cooperate with FRSC operatives and other security agencies deployed on the highways, adding that road safety is a collective responsibility.
He assured Nigerians that the corps would sustain the Zero Tolerance operation throughout the festive season to ensure safe and hitch-free travel across the country.
