The Federal Government has launched a digital portal designed to simplify the registration and licensing process for teachers across the country.
The platform, unveiled on Monday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, is expected to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the teaching profession.
According to the minister, the initiative is part of ongoing reforms to reposition the education sector by ensuring that only qualified and certified professionals are engaged in teaching.
“The digital registration and licensing portal will serve as a central database for teachers nationwide. It will provide easy access for educators to register, renew, and verify their licenses, while also giving government real-time data for planning and regulation,” Mamman said.
He explained that the move would eliminate bottlenecks associated with manual registration, curb forgery of teaching licenses, and promote professionalism in line with global best practices.
Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, noted that the portal is user-friendly and accessible from mobile devices, adding that teachers in rural areas would also benefit from the system through designated support centres.
“This innovation is a game-changer. It ensures that every teacher in Nigeria is accounted for, properly documented, and continually monitored to maintain standards,” Ajiboye said.
Stakeholders present at the event, including representatives of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and education development partners, commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to strengthen the profession.
The Federal Government urged all teachers, both in public and private institutions, to take advantage of the portal and regularize their registration, stressing that compliance would soon become mandatory for employment and promotion in the education sector.
