Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) on Monday commenced an industrial action, leading to the shutdown of government activities across Abuja.
The strike, which began early in the day, disrupted operations at key government offices within the Federal Capital Territory.
Our correspondent, who visited the FCTA Secretariat at about 8:10 a.m., observed a heavy security presence at the entrance of the complex, with personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police Force stationed at the gate. Workers were prevented from gaining access to the premises.
As a result, offices within the secretariat remained closed, with normal administrative activities grounded.
The industrial action is expected to affect all FCTA secretariats, departments and agencies, as well as area councils and parastatals, thereby halting official government functions across the territory.
Although details of the workers’ demands were not immediately disclosed, the strike has heightened concerns over service delivery in the nation’s capital, particularly if the action persists.
Efforts to reach officials of the FCTA and labour union leaders for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid ongoing negotiations between workers’ unions and the administration over outstanding welfare and administrative issues.
