The 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections have come and gone, but the political messaging began almost immediately after the ballots were counted.
In a post-election broadcast, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, used the outcome of Saturday’s polls not just to congratulate winners, but to draw sharp political lines — hailing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while subtly dismissing emerging opposition forces, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The FCT council polls, conducted across the six Area Councils — AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Kwali and Abaji — were widely monitored as a barometer of grassroots strength ahead of the next general election cycle. With control of ward structures and local administrations at stake, the elections carried weight far beyond municipal governance.
In his address, Wike described the exercise as peaceful and credible, attributing its success to President Tinubu’s leadership and the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“The peaceful conduct of the election is a testament to the commitment of the people of the FCT to democracy and good governance,” Wike said.
He congratulated both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for their victories, declaring that the results had clarified Nigeria’s political landscape.
“This election has indeed shown that Nigerians now know the ruling party and the real opposition party,” he said — a remark widely interpreted as a jab at smaller parties seeking to expand their footprint in Abuja.

“The election has further exposed the hypocrisy of people who go about buying corn and groundnut from roadside sellers for the purpose of campaign just to deceive Nigerians. Yesterday, the residents of FCT demonstrated that they cannot be deceived by emergency democrats, who have chosen not to see anything good in our country and its government.”
The Minister framed the council poll outcome as a validation of Tinubu’s governance record in the capital, pointing to ongoing infrastructure expansion, road construction, and urban renewal efforts across satellite towns.
“I thank Mr President for the development he has brought to the FCT. This election is a reflection of the President’s vision and leadership, and a testimony that the Renewed Hope Agenda has brought optimism and confidence to the people of the FCT.”
Wike also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, describing the exercise as “free, fair, and credible,” and praising Tinubu for supporting reforms to strengthen the Electoral Act.
While turnout figures in some city-centre polling units reflected voter apathy, participation in several satellite communities was more robust, reinforcing Wike’s emphasis on grassroots mobilisation.
“To the residents of the FCT, especially those in the satellite towns, I once again commend you for coming out in large numbers to exercise your franchise,” he said.
