The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has advocated for sustained capacity-building initiatives for journalists covering market competition and consumer rights, emphasizing that specialized beat reporting in this domain remains relatively nascent across the country’s media landscape.

The call was made on Sunday, September 27, 2026, during an interactive media workshop and capacity-building session organized by the regulatory body at the Commission’s Headquarters in Corporate Area, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, stressed the pivotal role of media organizations in educating the public, upholding market integrity, and fostering transparent business practices.

”Competition regulation and consumer protection represent an evolving statutory framework in Nigeria,” Bello remarked. “Because this beat is relatively new compared to traditional political or financial reporting, continuous training and strategic collaboration with media practitioners are essential to ensure accurate, impactful, and fair reporting.”

Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, reiterated that the workshop forms part of the Commission’s broader strategic roadmap to empower judicial officers, civil society organizations, and media professionals with in-depth knowledge of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

Ijagwu highlighted recent regulatory benchmarks, including major investigations into digital economy practices, Big Tech compliance, anti-competitive market structures, and predatory pricing across retail markets. He noted that well-informed journalists act as the primary bridge between regulatory interventions and public awareness.

Representatives from key media unions, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), commended the FCCPC for the initiative, urging other regulatory agencies to emulate the framework by offering continuous technical masterclasses for beat reporters.
