The Farin-Ruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene following a series of deadly attacks by suspected bandits said to be coming from neighbouring Katsina State.
The appeal was made by the community leader and chairman of the local security committee, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, during a press conference held in Kano on Thursday evening.
Bagobiri described the situation as “increasingly unbearable,” revealing that residents have been living in constant fear as bandits continue to invade the area, destroying farmlands, rustling livestock, and abducting villagers for ransom.
“Our people no longer sleep peacefully. The attacks have become frequent, especially at night. We have lost lives, property, and sources of livelihood. We are appealing to the Federal and Kano State Governments to come to our aid before the situation gets completely out of control.”
He explained that the bandits, often heavily armed, cross into the community through forest routes linking Kano and Katsina States. Despite efforts by local vigilantes to protect residents, the assailants’ superior firepower has made community defense increasingly difficult.
Bagobiri also commended the efforts of the Kano State Government and local security operatives but stressed that a coordinated federal response was necessary to restore peace and security.
“We appreciate the steps taken by the state government so far, but the challenge has gone beyond what local structures can handle. We need the intervention of the Nigerian Army, the Police, and other federal security agencies to secure our borders and protect our people.”
The community leader urged the Federal Government to deploy more security personnel to the area, strengthen surveillance along border communities, and support victims of recent attacks with relief materials.
Residents of Farin-Ruwa and surrounding villages have reportedly fled their homes in large numbers in recent weeks, raising concerns about displacement and humanitarian needs in the area.
As insecurity continues to spread across parts of the North-West, the Farin-Ruwa community’s plea adds to growing calls for a more coordinated national strategy to tackle rural banditry and restore lasting peace to affected regions.
