The family of a young man, Henry Obasi, who was brutally murdered by members of a notorious gang in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in September 2023, has made a public appeal to police authorities. They are urging law enforcement to take swift action in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting those responsible for the tragic death of their brother, in order to ensure that justice is served.
The Obasi family has expressed deep frustration and sorrow, noting that despite the passage of time since the incident, the perpetrators remain at large. The murder, which took place on Iwofe Road near Saint John’s Catholic Church around 9:20 p.m., was described by the family as “a senseless act of violence.” They have been left to grieve the loss of Henry, who was killed on the streets of Port Harcourt more than a year ago, while those responsible continue to roam free in the city.
According to eyewitness accounts, Henry was followed by his attackers and shot while he was on his way home from work. His lifeless body was later recovered by police officers. A close resident and colleague of the deceased, who requested to remain anonymous, shared further insights into the tragic event. He revealed that Henry and his older brother, Solomon Obasi, had been living in fear for months prior to the murder. They had reportedly been threatened by the same dangerous gang, which had earlier attacked Solomon, leaving him severely injured and prompting the brothers to flee the city for their safety.
The anonymous co-worker suspects that Henry’s murder could have been a case of mistaken identity or a violent message intended for Solomon. “Henry was a kind and gentle person,” he said. “He was a dedicated worker, well-liked by everyone at our workplace. He didn’t deserve to die in such a cruel way.”
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the tragic incident and has launched an investigation to apprehend the killers. The Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, reassured the public that the police were committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
Meanwhile, the entire community remains shaken by the murder, with residents calling for heightened security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The sense of fear and uncertainty has left many anxious about the safety of their own lives, as they await answers and justice for Henry Obasi.
