The Eze Ndigbo of Ibadanland and Oyo State, His Royal Highness Dr. Alex Anozie, has joined thousands of mourners in paying tribute to the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, who passed away at the age of 81. In a heartfelt statement delivered at his palace in Ibadan, Eze Anozie described the late monarch as “a bridge-builder, a peaceful leader, and a shining example of Yoruba royalty.”
Dr. Anozie expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that Oba Balogun’s death was not only a loss to the Yoruba people but to the entire Nigerian traditional institution. “The Olubadan was a man of wisdom and great maturity. His door was always open to everyone — Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and all others. He ruled with fairness and humility,” he said.
In a rare gesture of interethnic solidarity, the Eze Ndigbo highlighted the unique strengths of the Ibadan traditional leadership system, calling it “a model of order and peace that other ethnic communities in Nigeria could learn from.” He praised the succession structure of the Olubadan throne, which follows a clearly defined hierarchy and rotational system that minimizes conflict and ensures a smooth transition.
“Look at Ibadan — even before the final rites for the late Olubadan are concluded, the city already knows its next monarch. There is no quarrel, no litigation, no crisis. This is what a truly civilized system looks like,” Anozie emphasized.
The Igbo leader noted that while many traditional stools across the country are often marred by prolonged legal battles and power tussles after the death of a monarch, the Ibadan model continues to demonstrate stability and foresight.
“I salute the Ibadan Council of Chiefs and the people of this ancient city. They have built a succession model that promotes peace and continuity. It is a legacy worth emulating,” he added.
The Eze Ndigbo also called for greater cultural exchange and understanding between Nigeria’s ethnic groups, saying that mutual respect for traditional institutions and systems can foster national unity. He pledged continued support and friendship between the Igbo community and the people of Ibadan.
As preparations begin for the formal transition to the next Olubadan, many residents say they take comfort in the smoothness of the process — a sign of tradition working harmoniously in modern Nigeria.
Oba Lekan Balogun ascended the throne in 2022 and was widely respected for his intellect, political experience, and open-door leadership style. His successor, High Chief Owolabi Olakulehin, is expected to be installed soon, in line with the established Ibadan chieftaincy system.
For the Eze Ndigbo and many others across the country, Oba Balogun’s passing marks the end of an era — but also a reminder of the enduring strength of cultural systems when anchored in wisdom and justice.
