“Health is not just the absence of disease, but the ability to enjoy life fully.”

I was recently opportuned to meet an expert urologist professor during a session with me like an interview. This is his submission. I hope it helps men over 45/50.

He started by saying that as men hit 45 to 50, the prostate naturally starts to grow and this is called BPH, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It’s not cancer, but if you ignore it, it can make urination, sleep, and even sex uncomfortable. The prostate sits around the urethra, so when it enlarges it squeezes that tube and that’s why you start noticing weak stream, urgency, and waking up 2 to 3 times at night. Most men just accept it as “old age” but early attention can keep it slight and manageable.

Then he moved to what worsens it. On foods, he said to limit red meat and processed meat like sausage, suya, corned beef and hot dogs because they fuel inflammation. Too much dairy like milk, cheese and butter can also increase BPH risk because of the high calcium. Spicy foods and very salty meals like pepper soup and salty snacks irritate the bladder and prostate. Refined carbs and sugar from white bread, pastries and soft drinks add belly fat and inflammation, and that extra weight puts more pressure on the prostate. He also mentioned canned foods with BPA because the chemical can disrupt hormones.

For drinks, especially at night, he warned against alcohol. Beer and spirits irritate the bladder and make you run to the toilet more. Caffeine in coffee, tea, energy drinks and cola is a bladder stimulant that causes urgency. Don’t stop water, but don’t take 2 to 3 liters right before bed. Other things to avoid are holding urine too long, sitting for hours, smoking, and carrying too much belly fat because that fat increases estrogen which can further grow the prostate.

The good news he gave is that slight enlargement can be managed without surgery. First, lifestyle. Empty your bladder fully and don’t hold it. Walk briskly for 30 minutes, 4 times a week to reduce inflammation. Even losing 5 to 10kg helps. Kegel and pelvic exercises also strengthen the muscles that control urination.

On food that helps, he recommended tomatoes and watermelon for lycopene, beans, lots of fruits .. then green tea, pumpkin seeds and nuts for zinc and antioxidants, fish and flaxseed for omega-3 to fight inflammation, and plenty of vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and leafy greens.

On final word for alcohol lovers ..

Hear him

Be social drinker or stick with just lite drink like Heineken, a bit expensive than other beer and lesser alcohol content , but do your best to leave it and red meat, stick with fish
