Sifiso Dabengwa, the former CEO of MTN Group has passed away. His death was announced through the X handle of Ibbo D. Mandaza, a Zimbabwean academic and political analyst.
“This is very sad indeed. My former student and nephew of my brother and comrade, Dumiso Dabengwa, Siliso has succumbed to an illness he fought so bravely for several years. Sincere condolences to his wife, children and the families and friends,” Mandaza wrote.
The telecoms old hand resigned from MTN in early November 2015, two weeks after the company disclosed that it was facing a $5.2 billion fines in Nigeria for failing to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered subscribers.
From March 2011 to November 2015, the telecom veteran served as MTN Group’s CEO. In 2004, he joined MTN as managing director of its South African business. He was later elevated to COO and also served as CEO of MTN Nigeria till 2006.
Under his stewardship, MTN achieved remarkable growth and innovation, positioning itself as a major player in the global telecom sector. His vision and strategic acumen were credited with driving the company’s expansion into new markets and enhancing its technological capabilities.
