Former Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 Imo State election, Prof. Gerald Okeke, has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to contest the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Okeke, who is an expert in Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability, said his experience and professional background place him in a strong position to compete effectively in the forthcoming election.
Speaking to reporters at the Nike Lake Hotel Resort in Enugu, Okeke expressed confidence that his entry into the race on the platform of the ADC makes him a candidate to beat in the governorship contest. He said his decision to pitch his tent with the ADC was informed by recent political realignments.
According to him, the move of Mr Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to the ADC influenced his decision to join the party, noting that the ADC offers a credible platform for progressive governance.
Okeke said his ambition is driven by a desire to bring sustainable development, environmental responsibility and people-oriented policies to Imo State. He added that his campaign would focus on inclusive governance, economic development and addressing environmental challenges confronting the state.
The former Labour Party candidate called on supporters and stakeholders to rally behind his ambition, stressing that the ADC provides a fresh opportunity to reposition Imo State for growth and sustainable development.
