In a significant political development, Salihu Yakasai, a former Director-General of Media and Communications to Abdullahi Ganduje, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Yakasai made the announcement on Monday via his Facebook page, revealing that the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, friends, and political associates. In his statement, he described the move as the start of a “new journey” with the ADC.
“After advising and contacting family and friends and other political activists, we have decided to join the ADC Party—New Journey! Already, I submitted my exit letter from APC and completed registration with our new party, ADC,” Yakasai said.
He also encouraged his supporters and other political enthusiasts to follow suit, providing a party registration link for those interested in acquiring their membership cards. “Those interested in joining the ADC party can register through the party link; shortly you will receive your membership card,” he added.
Political analysts view Yakasai’s defection as part of a broader trend of political realignments in the state ahead of the 2027 elections, with several notable figures seeking platforms they believe will provide better opportunities for influence and political growth. Yakasai’s move is expected to strengthen the ADC’s presence in Kano, a state long considered an APC stronghold.
Commenting on the decision, some observers noted that Yakasai’s political experience and network within the state could provide the ADC with an edge in mobilising grassroots support, particularly among youths and media-savvy constituencies.
While the APC has yet to respond formally to Yakasai’s resignation, party insiders suggest that defections of high-profile figures could trigger strategic recalibrations within the state chapter ahead of upcoming elections.
With his entry into the ADC, Yakasai joins a growing list of political actors seeking alternative platforms to drive their ambitions, signalling potential shifts in Kano’s political landscape and offering fresh momentum to the ADC as it seeks to expand its influence nationally.
