A former spokesperson to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has declared his intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027. Sowunmi made the announcement on Tuesday during an interactive session with his supporters and journalists, which was held virtually via Zoom. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said his decision to join the race was informed by what he described as persistent development lapses across the state.
According to him, Ogun State has continued to grapple with deep-seated governance challenges despite its strategic location and economic potential. He noted that insecurity, declining education standards and inadequate healthcare services have continued to affect the wellbeing of residents. Sowunmi said his governorship ambition is driven by a desire to offer purposeful leadership that prioritises the safety and welfare of the people.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling insecurity, while also investing in human capital development through improved education and accessible healthcare. The former Atiku Abubakar spokesperson added that Ogun State requires leadership that is people-centred and accountable, promising to engage widely with stakeholders as he prepares for the 2027 election.
He called on party members and residents of the state to support his vision of repositioning Ogun for sustainable development and inclusive growth.
