THE Enugu State government, South-East Nigeria has taken a bold step in advancing the nation’s aviation sector by acquiring four aircraft at a cost of ₦41.13 billion to establish Enugu Air. With this move, Enugu becomes one of only three Nigerian states—alongside Akwa Ibom and Cross River—to own and operate an airline.
Enugu Air is set to enhance connectivity between Enugu and other regions of Nigeria, with potential for expansion beyond national borders in the future. This development is a game-changer for the Eastern region, improving accessibility, creating employment and fostering economic opportunities for residents.
Nigeria’s Growing Aviation Industry
Nigeria’s aviation industry has been experiencing steady growth, driven by increasing passenger traffic and government investment in infrastructure. According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, the country recorded over 16 million domestic and international passengers in 2023, a significant increase from previous years. The sector contributes approximately ₦198 billion ($250 million) annually to Nigeria’s GDP and supports over 241,000 jobs across airlines, airports, and related industries.
Nigeria boasts over 31 airports, with major international hubs in Lagos (Murtala Muhammed International Airport), Abuja (Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport), Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu.
The federal government has also invested heavily in airport modernization, with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) implementing upgrades to enhance safety, efficiency, and passenger experience.
Additionally, Nigeria has seen a rise in state-owned airlines, with Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air leading the way as a successful regional carrier since its launch in 2019 while others are investing in cargo airports among others, the introduction of Enugu Air follows this trend, reinforcing the role of sub-national governments in strengthening the aviation industry.

Beyond transportation, the airline is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and drive economic growth, solidifying Enugu’s position as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
