The Enugu State Government has constituted Development Centres across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas to strengthen grassroots participation in governance and improve engagement between communities and government. The initiative is also aimed at ensuring wider representation in local decision-making and increasing the reach of government programmes at the community level.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu. He said Gov. Peter Mbah approved the appointments to fill existing vacancies in the various Development Centres and strengthen their operations across the state.
Onyia said the centres would provide communities with channels to contribute to government programmes and policies while promoting inclusivity and responsiveness. He explained that each Development Centre would comprise an administrator, secretary and members drawn from communities within the respective areas, with appointments reflecting different communities, wards and development areas.
The SSG said the newly constituted centres covered several Local Government Areas, including Aninri, Awgu, Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Isi-Uzo and Nkanu East. He noted that four centres were constituted in each of Aninri, Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North and Igbo-Eze South, while Awgu and Enugu East also received multiple centres, with three established in Isi-Uzo.
He urged the newly appointed administrators, secretaries and members to work towards effective coordination of development activities within their areas and strengthen the connection between communities and government.
Onyia said their participation would contribute to the administration’s objective of deepening grassroots involvement in governance and ensuring that the concerns and priorities of residents were reflected in development efforts.
