A prominent leader of the Obidient Movement has thrown support behind former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent comments advocating a power shift in 2027, insisting that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, remains the rallying point for millions of Nigerians yearning for change.

Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday, the Obidient leader, Mr. Chinedu Okafor, said El-Rufai’s position reflects the growing consensus that political stability and fairness can only be sustained when power rotates equitably across the country. He stressed that the call resonates with Nigerians who feel marginalized under the current structure.

“El-Rufai only spoke the truth. Nigerians are not blind to the realities around them. The South has every right to present a credible candidate in 2027, and Peter Obi has proven himself as that candidate who embodies competence, transparency, and hope,” Okafor stated.

He maintained that despite attempts to downplay Obi’s influence, the former Anambra governor continues to command loyalty across the country, especially among youths and professionals disillusioned with mainstream politics.

“The Obidient Movement is stronger than ever. Obi remains the rallying point, not just for the South but for Nigerians who are tired of recycled leadership. He represents a break from the old order,” Okafor added.

The leader further urged opposition parties to unite behind Obi in the 2027 elections, arguing that a divided front would only strengthen the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile, political analysts say El-Rufai’s remarks have intensified the debate on zoning and succession ahead of the next general election. While some northern groups insist the region should retain power, others argue that equity and balance demand a shift.

The 2027 elections are still two years away, but alignments and realignments are already shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, with Peter Obi’s name consistently surfacing as a strong contender.
