Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has urged customers and community stakeholders to actively participate in protecting electricity infrastructure within its operational region.
Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, Acting Chief Executive Officer, EKEDC, made the call during a customer engagement forum held at the Orile Business District on Thursday in Lagos.
She stated that safeguarding facilities is a collective duty.
“Vandalism, energy theft, and encroachment on our installations do not just affect EKEDC, they disrupt lives and hamper economic growth,” she said.
Momoh, who was represented by Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulkadir, General Manager of Revenue Circle, also encouraged electricity consumers to adopt energy conservation practices to reduce bills and improve the power distribution system’s efficiency.
She said that EKEDC had launched a sensitisation campaign to educate customers on smart energy usage.
The CEO also addressed concerns regarding alleged extortion by prepaid meter installers, assuring consumers that the company would engage with the installers to resolve the issues.
She warned against meter bypassing and announced the formation of a secret monitoring team to inspect properties with illegal connections.
Mr Patrick Abuda, Head of Health, Safety and Environment, EKEDC, cautioned the public against erecting structures or trading near power lines and electrical installations, citing the risk of electrocution.
In their remarks, some residents of Orile appealed to EKEDC to reclassify them from Band A to Band B, citing widespread dissatisfaction with power quality in spite of paying higher tariffs.
The Chairman of Coker North, Mr Ogunmola Anthony, commended the engagement initiative and urged the company to prioritise customer satisfaction.
