The Babaloja-General of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaji Abiodun Kosoko, on Tuesday said measures were being taken to prevent food price hikes during Eid-el-Kabir.
Kosoko told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview that the Iyaloja-General, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, had directed market leaders to ensure adequate supply of goods and foodstuffs.
He said market leaders had met with traders and urged them to comply with directives aimed at ensuring affordability and availability of commodities during the festive period.
According to him, Tinubu-Ojo stressed that “there should not be any increase in prices of goods and commodities so that the less privileged can afford them during Eid-el-Kabir.”
Kosoko added that task force officials would monitor markets to ensure compliance with directives against arbitrary increases in prices of foodstuffs and essential commodities.
He said sanitation exercises were also being conducted across markets to ensure a clean environment for consumers during the festive shopping period.
Kosoko urged consumers to remain polite while bargaining, noting that respectful negotiations would prevent arguments that could escalate into conflicts in markets.
He stated that sanitation remained crucial to maintaining hygiene, especially with the anticipated influx of buyers during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
Kosoko assured residents that markets in Ojokoro remained committed to affordability, cleanliness and peaceful trading as preparations intensified for the festivities.
He quoted Tinubu-Ojo as saying: “Markets must serve everyone fairly during this season, ensuring peace, affordability and access for all consumers.”
