The Edo State Government has officially commenced the construction of a landmark two-storey general hospital in Iguobazuwa, the headquarters of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, in a strategic effort to expand access to quality and affordable healthcare across the state.

The groundbreaking and foundation-laying ceremony took place on Thursday afternoon at the project’s designated site in the central area of Iguobazuwa.

Performing the ceremony on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo, Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, led a delegation of local administration officials, traditional figures, community leaders, and healthcare stakeholders to signal the immediate kickoff of construction work.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Okpebholo, Deputy Governor Idahosa emphasized that the multi-storey facility forms a core component of the administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes decentralizing healthcare delivery and modernizing critical infrastructure statewide.

He noted that locating the facility directly in the heart of Iguobazuwa guarantees immediate access to high-quality secondary care whenever medical emergencies arise, ensuring seamless service delivery for local residents.

Upon completion, the multi-bed facility will feature a comprehensive two-storey layout structured for both inpatient and outpatient services. Designed as a fully equipped secondary referral center, the hospital will manage emergency medical cases, deliver maternal and child care, and offer a wide range of general treatments.

Beyond Iguobazuwa, the facility is set to serve as a primary healthcare hub for the broader Ovia Federal Constituency and neighboring agrarian communities across the Edo South region.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the host community, the Chairman of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, Mr. Anthony Osarobo, hailed the initiation of the project as a historic milestone for the council area.

He described the development as the first of its kind for the local government, praising the state administration for fulfilling its promise to bring essential medical infrastructure directly to the grassroots level.
