Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has official sworn in the 18 newly elected Local Government Area chairmen, issuing a stern charge for them to prioritize grassroots development, shun corruption, and complement state-level governance.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.
Addressing the council leaders following their subscription to the Oaths of Office and Allegiance, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the newly granted local government autonomy brings heightened accountability and responsibility to local leadership.
“I charged the Chairmen to make the development and welfare of our people their priority, complement the efforts of the State Government, and ensure that the impact of government is felt in every community,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
“With greater Local Government autonomy comes greater responsibility. I urge you to shun corruption and lead with humility, integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to service.”
The Governor urged the local leaders to key their administration’s initiatives directly into the state government’s SHINE Agenda to accelerate infrastructure, peace, and prosperity across all 192 wards.
He also urged the elected council heads to drive grassroots engagement to strengthen support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the broader political stability of the region.
Speaking on behalf of the 18 newly inaugurated council bosses, Mr. Gabriel Iduseri, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, commended the governor and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
“We pledge our commitment to provide purposeful, transparent, and people-oriented leadership at the grassroots,” Iduseri declared. “We recognize that this mandate comes with great responsibilities, and we are ready to key into the SHINE Agenda of the governor and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President to bring visible development to our communities.”
The event was attended by high-ranking state administration officials, traditional leaders, and political party faithfuls.
