The gubernatorial election in Edo state today being 21st  September 21, 2024, is a significant political event that will determine the next Governor of Edo State, Nigeria. This election marks the conclusion of the tenure of outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, and a closely watched contest has emerged among key candidates representing the major political parties.
The election sees Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) as the top contenders for the governorship position.
Over 2.2 million registered voters from various regions of Edo State—Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South—are expected to participate in the election. Edo South, which holds the majority of voters, is crucial to the outcome.
The region has become a battleground where candidates are leveraging their political connections to gather support. Ighodalo, with strong backing from PDP stalwarts like former governor Lucky Igbinedion and several political veterans, is expected to gain traction in this region
Meanwhile, the APC’s Okpebholo has support from key figures like Adams Oshiomhole, who is widely regarded as a political heavyweight in Edo North, another crucial region for deciding the election
Edo Central, with a smaller voter base, presents a more competitive landscape, as both PDP and APC candidates hail from the area. This region is expected to split its votes between the two major parties, with political alliances and local dynamics playing a major role
Security has been a focal point of preparations, with the Nigeria Police Force enacting a strict restriction on vehicular movement between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. across the state.
Police authorities have also banned security aides from accompanying VIPs to polling stations, aiming to prevent any intimidation or interference in the voting process.
INEC, Nigeria’s electoral body, has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent, free, and fair election, calling on all political parties and voters to maintain peace throughout the process
In the lead-up to the election, there were rumors of withdrawals, particularly surrounding the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata. However, Akpata quickly dismissed these claims, reaffirming his commitment to the race and accusing his political opponents of attempting to spread false information to mislead voters.
The Labour Party has also emphasized that it remains focused on its agenda for positive change in Edo State, which has garnered significant support from different quarters
The election’s result is widely anticipated as it could bring shifts in the political landscape of Edo State, with each party seeking to take control of the state government.
