Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has reportedly directed members of his cabinet to wear outfits branded with the image of President Bola Tinubu during official engagements and public functions, sparking mixed reactions across the state’s political landscape.
The directive, which was issued during the State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday in Benin City, is said to be part of efforts by the governor to demonstrate loyalty and solidarity with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
According to sources at the meeting, the governor emphasized that aligning visibly with President Tinubu’s administration would project unity and strengthen Edo State’s relationship with the centre, especially as his administration works to attract federal support for ongoing developmental projects.
“This government stands firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda,” Okpebholo was quoted as saying. “Wearing outfits that reflect our support is one way to show that Edo is solidly behind him. It is not just about clothing; it is about shared vision and cooperation.”
The governor’s directive has, however, drawn criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, who described the move as unnecessary and politically motivated.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo accused the governor of “turning governance into a partisan fashion parade,” alleging that the directive distracts from more pressing issues of governance.
“Instead of focusing on policies to improve the lives of Edo people, the APC government is busy introducing dress codes to please Abuja,” the PDP spokesperson said. “Edo deserves leadership, not loyalty shows.”
Some cabinet members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reportedly expressed unease over the directive, noting that while they support the president, the branding order could be perceived as excessive.
Political observers, however, view Okpebholo’s move as a strategic gesture to consolidate his position within the APC and secure closer ties with the federal leadership ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has yet to issue an official statement clarifying whether the Tinubu-branded attire is mandatory for all state officials or symbolic for specific events.
As debates continue, the development underscores the growing intertwining of political loyalty and governance style in Edo’s evolving political scene.
