The Edo State government has directed the immediate arrest and prosecution of students involved in a disturbing bullying incident at the Igbinedion Education Centre, highlighting the state’s zero-tolerance stance on acts of violence and intimidation in schools.
Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, described the act as “completely unacceptable” during an interview with Channels TV, stressing that bullying among students cannot be justified under any circumstances.
“It is quite disturbing. When we heard the news and saw the clips of the video, we were wondering what could have warranted such behaviour,” Afegbua said. “Such actions go against the principles of discipline, respect, and safety that schools are meant to uphold.”
Eyewitness accounts and video footage of the incident, which quickly circulated on social media, showed students engaging in aggressive and humiliating behaviour toward their peers. The shocking clips ignited public outrage, prompting swift condemnation from parents, educators, and government officials alike.
Afegbua confirmed that the state government had already instructed law enforcement authorities to identify the students involved and ensure they face appropriate legal action. “We are working closely with the school authorities and the relevant security agencies to make sure that justice is served. There will be no leniency for those who bully others,” he said.
The commissioner also underscored the broader implications of such acts, warning that failure to address bullying could have long-term psychological and social consequences for victims. “Bullying can leave lasting scars on children, affecting their education, self-esteem, and overall well-being,” he noted.
In addition to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, the Edo State government is reviewing policies and regulations governing schools to strengthen measures against bullying. Afegbua highlighted the need for stricter supervision, counselling services, and proactive interventions to create a safe and supportive environment for students across the state.
The principal of Igbinedion Education Centre has reportedly pledged full cooperation with authorities, promising to provide all necessary information to facilitate the investigation. The school is also expected to implement immediate measures to prevent a recurrence, including heightened supervision and disciplinary enforcement.
