Voting has commenced in the Edo Central Senatorial District as residents troop out to elect their next representative at the National Assembly in Saturday’s by-election.
Reports from various polling units across the district indicate that accreditation of voters and balloting began as early as 8:30 a.m., with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deploying materials and personnel to ensure a smooth exercise.
The by-election was necessitated following the declaration of the seat vacant after a court ruling that nullified the previous occupant’s mandate. Political parties had since intensified campaigns across the district, with candidates promising to prioritize infrastructure, youth empowerment, and improved representation at the Senate.
Security operatives, including the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other agencies, have been stationed at strategic locations to maintain peace and order during the election.
Voters were seen turning out in large numbers in Esan West, Esan Central, and Esan North-East Local Government Areas, which make up the senatorial district. At some polling stations, electoral officers were observed sensitizing voters on proper procedures to avoid voided ballots.
