The Lagos State Government has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), also known as Mainland Hospital, Yaba, to ensure peak operational readiness amid the expanding Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
​The evaluation was led on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, alongside the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Adejumo, and key Ministry of Health staff.
The initiative focused on reviewing critical facility infrastructure, surge capacities, and containment systems required to handle high-consequence disease threats.
An Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Inspected for real-time intelligence gathering, central outbreak tracking, and rapid response coordination.
A Diagnostic & Biosafety Infrastructure; Evaluated the operational readiness of laboratory systems, including the facility’s Biosafety Level-3 Laboratory and Biobank, to process high-risk pathogens securely.
A Clinical & Care Facilities: Assessed clinical support systems, oxygen supply infrastructure, triage zones, and isolation wards to manage potential patient intake.
Identified section-specific maintenance needs across the biobank, EOC, pharmacy, catering services, and site drainage networks to uphold strict biosafety protocols.
​”We thoroughly inspected the Emergency Operations Center, laboratory equipment, oxygen supply infrastructure, triage and isolation areas, and external site works to ensure seamless functionality during a high-consequence outbreak,” stated Prof. Akin Abayomi.
​The assessment comes as public health authorities closely monitor the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus driving the DRC outbreak, for which conventional treatments and vaccines remain limited.
State health officials confirmed that while no suspected or confirmed Ebola cases have been detected in Lagos, emergency stockpiles of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) remain deployed and port health surveillance at entry points stays heightened.
