Nigerian troops have rescued 31 abducted civilians after a deadly terrorist attack disrupted Easter Sunday worship in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in what authorities have described as a swift and decisive military intervention.
The attack, which targeted the First ECWA Church in Ariko during Easter celebrations, left at least five worshippers dead on the spot, with several others abducted by heavily armed gunmen who stormed the premises mid-service.
According to security sources, a distress call from the community triggered an immediate response from the Nigerian Army. Troops, working closely with local guides familiar with the terrain, launched a rapid pursuit operation that led to a fierce gun battle with the fleeing attackers.
Faced with overwhelming firepower from advancing troops, the terrorists reportedly abandoned 31 hostages during the confrontation. One of the rescued victims is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
Security operatives also recovered the bodies of five victims killed during the initial assault. Blood trails along the terrorists’ escape routes suggest the attackers suffered significant casualties as they retreated under pressure from the military.
In response, the Nigerian Army has intensified operations across the area, deploying additional personnel to track down the fleeing gunmen, dismantle their hideouts, and rescue any remaining captives.
Military authorities described the operation as a strong demonstration of their commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining national security. They also emphasized ongoing collaboration with other security agencies and local communities in combating terrorism and banditry.
“Collective vigilance remains vital to achieving enduring peace and stability,” the Army said in a statement, urging residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support security operations.
The attack has left the Ariko community reeling, with reports indicating that a second worship centre in the area may also have been affected. Local sources put the total death toll at around seven, although official figures remain under verification.
Despite the tragedy, the successful rescue operation has brought a measure of relief to grieving residents, highlighting the military’s rapid response capability in the face of escalating security threats in Kaduna State.
